Electing a President

The American president and his running mate, the vice president, are elected every four years. They are the only federal officials who are elected by the whole nation. There are two major stages in the election process. In the first stage the parties decide whom they shall nominate as their candidates for President and Vice President, and in the second the people elect their President and Vice President.
